Peptides: approved medicines and everything else
Some peptides are licensed drugs with decades of data. Many sold in wellness settings are neither approved nor studied for the use being sold.
The definition
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids — smaller than a protein, larger than a single amino acid. Peptides act as signalling molecules throughout the body, and that signalling role is what makes them attractive as drugs.
Crucially, peptides are not a regenerative pathway in the same sense as the other three. They are a chemical class, not a tissue-derived product, and grouping them alongside cells and vesicles reflects how they are marketed rather than what they are.
Where they come from
Therapeutic peptides are chemically synthesised or produced recombinantly. In a wellness setting the same molecule may instead be supplied by a compounding pharmacy, or sold as material labelled for research use only — which is a labelling category, not a quality standard.
Studied uses versus marketed uses
The approved end of this category is substantial and well characterised: insulin, GLP-1 receptor agonists for diabetes and obesity, and a long list of hormone analogues used in oncology and endocrinology. These have full regulatory dossiers behind them.
The marketed end is different. Compounds promoted for recovery, tissue repair, tanning, sleep or longevity are frequently not approved for those uses in the jurisdiction where they are sold, and human evidence for them ranges from limited to absent. The molecule having a plausible mechanism is not the same as the product having been tested in people with your condition.
Evidence and regulatory reality
Whether a peptide is a licensed medicine, a compounded preparation or an unapproved substance depends on the exact molecule and the country you are standing in. Two peptides offered on the same clinic menu can sit in completely different regulatory categories.
Compounded preparations are not individually reviewed for safety and effectiveness the way approved medicines are, and sourcing and purity vary between suppliers.
Questions worth asking a provider
- Exactly which peptide, at what dose, for how long?
- Is it an approved medicine in this country for this use? If not, what is its status?
- Who prescribes it, and are they licensed here?
- Which pharmacy compounds or supplies it, and what purity testing is done?
- What human studies exist for this compound in this indication?
- How will side effects be monitored, and what interacts with it?
